A scene from the polemic Cuatro Menos.

A scene from the polemic Cuatro Menos.

There is a play with the goal of starkly approaching issues of contemporary Cuban reality, which is Cuatro menos (Four Less), by the always controversial playwright and journalist Amado del Pino. Put on by the Vital Theater group, it is now playing in the Bertolt Brecht Cultural Center´s theater.

The main characters are four young men, rivaling in thoughts of serious conflicts within Cuban society, in which they expose without hesitation: the atavistic homophobe, the inconsistencies of appearances and the militancies, the intellectual (dis)honesty and the incessant migratory trend of the island´s youth. They´re certainly very tough debates, but necessary in this context, which is defining the country´s future.

Amado del Pino, distressed, shoots off alarms of facing a future that´s already present, as it doesn´t entail the essential (and logical) changing of generations and replaces experiences with national development and progress.

Throughout its 16 years, Vital Theater has always opted for patio dramaturgical works, especially those with a problematic profile that are able to mobilize the audience. Their repertoire includes two other pieces by Amado del Pino.

Cuatro menus won the 2008 Carlos Arniches International Award, from the Spanish city Alicante, and it was also published within the important collection, Contemporary Spanish Theater.

The play will be performed until this Sunday, 9 October, and up until now, it´s received significant successful reviews, especially within the public. Their efforts will surely be noticed on the stage, so don´t miss the opportunity to see one of the performances.
