Habana Compás Dance in escene

Habana Compás Dance in escene

I find it difficult to describe how superbly impressed I was with Habana Comás Dance (Havana Dance Rhythm), when I saw their fabulous performers and magical drummers on stage. I say performers and not dancers, as these beautiful ladies do something far beyond a dance company performance.

With singular mastery and professional rigor, they use a wide array of instruments to accompany their performance, from traditional Spanish castanets to international drumsticks, beating on rustic stools or the stage´s polished tables. These wonderful, sensual youth are able to extort music from any structure with anything.

Other prestigious dance collectives such as the Spanish Ballet of Cuba and the Liszt Alfonso Company, have structured many of their hit shows around a combination of Flamenco music and our Afro-cuban roots, but Habana Comás Dance goes a bit further. They conceptually alter (but not disable) rhythm´s required codes and Iberian dance, incorporating the Cuban essentials, that which is juicy and the passion of those born on the island, which has opened doors to audiences in Spain, Venezuela and the United States.

These dancers have a lot of warrior in them, from the fierce Amazons, shaking and making thunder while running around to amazing, unknown harmonies and gestures, giving us a refined art, an art that simply leaves us exalted.

Much praise to Eduardo Córdova, Musical Director, Liliet Rivera, General Director, Dance and Choreography, to the four musicians and the 12 dancers, for having achieved an artistic unity with such a high performance level, that you should see if you visit Havana.
