Omara Portuondo

Omara Portuondo

I would like to invite you to Omara Portuondo´s —Filin´s girlfriend, The Lady of Buenavista Social Club— Tomorrow, 17 August, there will be a very special concert starting at 8:30 p.m. in the Karl Marx Theater.

Portuondo has had a long and successful artistic career spanning more than 60 years, and is highly known nationally and internationally. Along with César Portillo de la Luz, José Antonio Méndez and the pianist Frank Emilio Flynn, she sang North American jazz´s standards based on "Cubanized" versions with a lot of "feeling," or as we Cubans say, "filin," and expression that transcended the movement for posterity.

As a “Cuarteto las D´Aida” member, she has shared the stage with Rita Montaner, Bola de Nieve, Édith Piaf, Pedro Vargas, Benny Moré and Nat King Cole.

Her discography includes 30 titles alone, and the number of collaborated albums is more than 20, with orchestras and bands such as Irakere, Van Van, Adalberto Álvarez, Aragón, Afro Cuban All Stars, Buena Vista Social Club, and performances with Alejandro Sanz, Barbarito Torres, Ibrahim Ferrer, Richard Egües, Harold López- Nussa, Joe Barbieri and Chucho Valdés, among others.

Portuondo also recorded Buena Vista Social Club presenta...Omara Portuondo, with a stellar group of musicians: Rubén Gonzáles, Orlando “Cachaíto” López, Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, Jesús Ramos, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo, Manuel Galván and Ibrahim Ferrer.

Her tours have taken her to major world music centers, one memorable performance in 2002 at the Festival of Jazz in Japan, where she sang along with legends such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, John Patitucci, Wayne Shorter and Danilo Pérez. Portuondo was the first Cuban artist, island resident, to win and personally receive a Latin Grammy Award in 2009, in the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category for her album Gracias.

For all of these reasons and because she´s truly a must-see, those in Havana can´t miss this special concert by Omara Portuondo, the Lady of Buenavista Social Club, tomorrow, Wednesday, 17 August, 2011 starting at 8:30 p.m. at the Karl Marx Theater. "Filin´s" girlfriend will perform pieces from her extensive repertoire, as well as songs from her album just mentioned, Gracias; and as always, she will be overflowing with her Cuban identity.
