The artistic career of this young and beautiful artist full of enthusiasm started in 1961 at the famous cabaret “Tropicana”, being observed by the great Rodney who predicted her a brilliant future as artist. Mayda Limonta became the first black women at the majestic “Paraíso bajo las estrellas (“A paradise underneath the stars”), as the “Tropicana” also goes by.
Since her first show, directed by Armando Suez – dancing with Tomás Morales and the remembered twins of the “Tropicana” – she developed a unique style that she managed to improve in collaboration with great choreographs, such as Alberto Alonso and Luis Trápaga, who asked her to join an experimental dance project.
With her presence she illuminated the stages of the five most famous cabarets of Cuba, the already mentioned “Tropicana” as well as also the hotels Riviera, Nacional, Habana Libre and the Internacional de Veradero. Also TV producers enjoyed her art, broadcasting shows where she danced pieces of the international repertoire, such as the exquisite “Concierto de Aranjuez” by the maestro Joaquin Rodrigo. She also joined the movie scene on various occasions, playing in movies such as “Para quién baila Cuba?” (“Who is Cuba dancing for?”), "Aventuras de Juan Quin Quin" (“The adventures of Juan Quin Quin”) and "Cecilia" by the prestigious director Humberto Solás.
Being an elegant women with an enviable smile and lean body, she left everybody breathless by seeing that much beauty and talent in only one women; she attracted the attention of directors, actors, filmmakers and photographers, such as Osvaldo Salas and Korda, who gave us the world famous picture of “Che” Guevara.
She left traces of her charisma and charm also in Europe and America, for example at the famous theater “El molino” in Barcelona (Spain). Nowadays, this lady who radiates “Cubanía” from dusk ‘til dawn, is preparing a tribute to Josephine Baker. “El Sevillanito” gave her the nickname “the black pearl of Cuba” which she keeps being for all of us.
