Olga Navarro: The Cuban Cabaret Star of the Verse
Cuban culture includes various essential names, one of them being Olga Navarro. This women who has filled the show business with colors was born in La Habana in the 1930s, actress, model, composition, poet and of an awe inspiring beauty.
She is the only member of UNEAC (Writers and Artists Union of Cuba) which belongs to the scenic arts, literature and music.
Her poetic work has remained in books edited in Cuba, Spain and Colombia, among others "A ti" (1956), "La flor erguida" (1990), "Ser mujer y poeta" (2004) and many more published in various countries. She has also written tales for children, such as "Llevando el compás" and "Juega conmigo abuelita".
Her musical work is not less recognized, which includes numerous compositions which have been interpreted by Vicentico Valdés, Rosita Fornés, Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, Anaís Abreu, Frank Domínguez and Meme Solís who have converted them into hits of the corresponding era, such as "Aquí de pie", "Eso no lo he dicho yo", "Con mi soledad" and many more.
International festivals have witnessed her success, among others "Sopot", the "Festival de Cannes" and the "Karlovy Vari". The artist has shared the stage with world famous artists, such as "Nat King Cole", "Lola Flores", "Edith Piaf", María Remolá", "Olga Guillot" and "Billy Daniels".
A woman of a robust figure, she was the inspiring muse of the notable caricaturist Wilson who found in her a graceful and divine beauty which was given expression to in those missed "Criollitas" - historic tales with Cuban Creole figures - which accompanied past periodical publications.
Remembered are: "Cinco nombers de mujer" in the Hotel Riviera, "Tríptico" in the Internacional de Varadero, "Se cambia se cambia" in the Salón Rojo del Capri and other shows which carried on the tradition of revue shows, cabaret and stage.
This lady, most important Cuban artist in Spain in 2005, nowadays plays very successfully at the cabaret "Las Vegas" every Friday between 4pm and 8pm, presenting current and past artists to an international audience which is welcomed with arms wide open and a smile by a very welcoming host, a friend in the end, reciting a poem which shows us that Cuba holds on tight to Olga Navarro, whose verses go straight to the heart.
