Sherezada in its curren state, far from its glory days.
This is a club that was THE nightclub for young Havanans to see and be seen around the end of the 50's, for that unique "Thousand and One Nights" atmosphere, with cushions on the floor in the traditional Arabic style, the excellent music, and of course the well-stocked bar. All of this in a building considered a jewel of architecture in Havana: the Focsa building.
The splendor of Club Scherezada lasted until march 1968, when the Revolutionary Offensive ordered all such establishments closed, establishing a very strict dry law. Though it was never explained why, it was understood that having fun and enjoying a drink were not very revolutionary…
This dark period lasted until 1970, when bars started opening their doors again, but some bars never fully recovered-namely, the Scherezada.
Today there is only an outside area for those who want to enjoy a drink, with four tables and a small bar area. Drinks are available in the two currencies of Cuba, and cigarettes and light snacks are sold as well.
You may notice the bar fill up around the time of the month when monthly government checks go out… The bar is frequented by every day Cubans, and tourists, of course, are welcome.
Address: Calle M, between 17th and 19th, El Vedado, Havana.
