Cold and delicious beer on La Muralla Tavern

The La Muralla Tavern, who opened in 2003, is considered one of Cuba´s best beer-joints. Located at the corner of Havana´s Plaza Vieja, the large eighteenth-century colonial mansion offers light, dark and black beers.

The brewing process is completely natural and occurs on-site, which has a majestic wooden bar where customers can check the beers´ quality, which, incidentally, is optimal. Furnished with large wooden tables and benches, service extends from the vast colonial hall to a segment of the square where smaller umbrella-shade-covered tables sit customers seem to prefer this area, as you can enjoy the light, fresh air and the privileged view of the square.

Aside from their artesian beer, the tavern offers a varied menu of Creole and international dishes. A few suggestions: The house pork steak with fried foods and black beans and rice; The delicious Cuban Jerk; A beer based sauce with tomatoes and red pepper (chilindrón) with meat and vegetable skewers.  Also standing out are the Sartén Cazador (beef with pork) and the Sartén Pescador (lobster, fish and shrimp accompanied by a cheese sauce). Courtesy of the establishment, they have a tradition of serving customers —an hour after the nine o´clock gun salute — El Ajiaco La Muralla (a spicy potato dish), which is prepared in-house and inspired by the famous Cuban "Sopón," a potato-based soup.

The venue is highly frequented year round, and they have quality and variety offers, such as the attractive beer dispensing tubes (an exclusive) in which the customer may pour their own beer at will.

From whatever angle in Plaza Vieja, La Muralla Tavern stands out. Their grill —which occupies one end of the hall— is constantly emitting amazing smells. Whoever steps into this place will not be able to resist the temptations to sit and try one of their dishes, accompanied with a jar or tube of their home-brewed beer.
