Once again the theater world in Havana is gearing up for another slate of great offerings for both Havana residents and people visiting the city: the Theater in May festival.

This month, theater troupes from around Latin America will converge in the city.

Organized by Casa de las Americas, the visiting troupes include Matacandelas from Colombia, Timbre 4 from Argentina, Yuyachkani from Peru, Compania Teatral La Cuarta out of Uruguay, as well as Teatro Promiscuo from Brasil, Alborde Teatro of Mexico and Sudakaribe of Puerto Rico.

Presenting their most recent pieces will be El Público, Buendia, DanzAbierta, El Mejunje, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, Teatro de las Estaciones and The Compania de Teatro Infantil La Colmenita.

Participants will examine the idea of rewriting classic and contemporary texts, collective creation, and the creative process in general. Thirteen plays that represent the diversity of Latin American and Caribbean theater will be presented, shedding light on adaptations of classic plays, as well as innovation and experimentation in the modern theater.

Theater in May will include workshops, conferences, exhibits, film screenings, wherein the perspective of each participating country will be featured, thus allowing the participants to get to know one another better.

Nine theaters in Havana will host the events, and performances will be held on four other Cuban provinces until May 16th. Havana residents look forward to a chance to peek into the cultures of neighboring Latin American countries.
