Old Havana Planetarium

The Havana Planetarium has just opened its doors, and it’s an attractive cultural center for the spread of knowledge of astronomy, the new field of exobiology, mathematics and physics. The planetarium is housed in a former theater, and has four stories: first is the Hall of the Universe, the Space Theater, the Cosmic Passage and the Gallery of the Scales.

The second floor holds Hall of Cosmonautics and Space Technology, the third floor houses the Star and Galaxy Hall, as well as the Balcony of the Solar System, while the top floor is home to an open air Observatory.

The biggest attraction is on the first floor, and it is the planetarium itself: a 10-foot wide round dome reproduces the King Star and includes a sophisticated projector, as well as excellent lighting, all to transport us to the immensity of outer space. The Big Bang is represented in 3-D and with sound. A spiral ramp leads to the center of the hall, which seats 63 people.

After experiencing the Big Bang, the visitor passes through the Cosmic Passage, where he will witness 13.7 million years of cosmic evolution. You can also enjoy a 3-D model of the Solar System, learn about every space mission past and future, as well as the astronauts who have explored outer space. The telescopes in the Observatory let you appreciate the planets clearly, or you can come at night to view different astronomical events.

The Planetarium is only open Wednesday through Sunday, opening at 9:30. We recommend making your reservation ahead of time by calling +537 864-95-44 and +537 864-95-45, or you can get your tickets 30 minutes before each show, depending on availability.

The equipment was donated by the Japanese government, and several Cuban and foreign firms funded the Planetarium as well.
