Many music lovers try to reserve these May dates for Havana, as there´s an outstanding event occurring in this field and its most modern realizations: the album. I´m speaking of the XV International Cubadisco Fair 2011, where the music suggests and promotes revelry, joy, enjoyment and fun. We associate it with satisfaction, positivity and happiness, all very necessary feelings for humans now and always. No matter the age, creed, nationality, political tendencies or sexual preference, music accompanies all of our life journeys.
Covering the actual task of Cuban music, feeling the healthy influence that has been and still is in many rhythms from the most diverse latitudes, a mixture of Spanish folk music and African rhythms, taking the most recent and accomplished albums, participating in tributes, sharing with artists, instrumentalists, soloists and producers, are only some of the rich possibilities for Cubadisco 2011.
It has been nominated for awards in 127 productions,101 phonograms, nine documentaries and 17 video clips, in 30 competitive categories including children´s music, anthology versions, concert music, choral music, trove, jazz, traditional music, popular dance music, rock and rap, among others.
The fair will honor soneros (those who play son) around the world, so it is no coincidence that Adalberto Alvarez, a sonero teacher, is the honorary president and has six nominations this XV edition. For the first time in these events, there is an Awards Gala scheduled for 14 May, emotionally charged for contestants and the audience, which will be held at Havana´s Karl Marx Theater and the popular Céspedes Park in the eastern city, Santiago de Cuba, which will host major shows and concerts, extending until 22 May.
Not just in these areas, but in the entire country, our rhythms will be the festival´s main events, which will be in theaters, public plazas and nightclubs, for the enjoyment and amusement of all Cuban music enthusiasts, whether national or foreign. We will surely enjoy this extended celebration of Cuban music and albums.
