Habanastation escene
During July and August at the capital´s theater La Rampa, the blind and visually impaired will be able to enjoy an audio description system for 30 Cuban films.
Widely used in developed countries, this system has an author narrating what happens on the screen for sequences without dialogue, complementing the film´s message.
Among the national film productions being shown with this system are classics such as La muerte de un burócrata (Death of a Bureaurcrat) and Se permuta (Swap), as well as other more recent films, Ciudad en rojo (City in Red), El cuerno de la abundancia (The horn of plenty), and Lista de espera (The Waiting List), among others.
Visually impaired children will also benefit from this new system, with the film Viva Cuba (Long Live Cuba), an animated film with the main character as the legendary Mambí soldier —a name given to the guerillas who fought against the Spanish— Elpidio Valdés.
All audio-description showings will begin at 2 p.m. with a 50 percent discount for the disabled, while disabled children get in free.
This program, dubbed "Touching the light," is sponsored by the National Association for the Blind and Project 23, with the support of ICAIC and ICRT, aiming to maintain the program´s future.
For those fortunate enough to not have visual impairments, the recently released feature film Habanastation by Ian Padrón is being shown. Padrón´s career achieved much notoriety after his documentary Fuera de Liga (Out of League), which is dedicated to the adventures of the capital´s baseball team, the Industriales. Directed mainly for kids, the film speaks of a Havana that "reveals two distinct faces, from the everyday life of a couple of kids," according to the film´s official synopsis. A tantalizing and fascinating proposal, this summer we are able to enjoy more diverse films.
