Escene of The Legion
Another striking monologue has come to the Havanian table; another transvestite actor has masterfully taken on the role of a female character, an old woman who once practiced the oldest trade in the world, which everyone knows as "The Legion."
The prestigious company "Hurbert de Blank" had already premiered this piece in 1996, but as 2010 comes to an end, they are bringing it back for public enjoyment. The play originated from a Spanish text by Fernando Quiñones, was revised and directed by Susan Alonso and interpreted by veteran actor Pancho García.
It´s quite a peculiar monologue, as the actor is constantly talking and interacting with the audience, especially the men--asking them questions, studying them, seducing them, giving praise and even physically touching them while cunningly recounting her life with a double meaning with which we Hispanics are so familiar; this allows us to know her better and admire her humanity, because this is a reflection on existential problems that could affect any human being, regardless of time or place, revealing that love always moves us--the nostalgia and frustrations we suffer, and the good humor that can save us. For this character, Francisco "Pancho" García has earned several awards in Cuba and Spain.
In this new season, we will surely enjoy "The Legion," always irresistible to the public and critics.
