A performance by two of Powder´s chacarters.

A performance by two of Powder´s chacarters.

"Powder," as we know it, is nothing more than magnesium silicate in powder form, mostly used for hygiene and cosmetics. But now in Havana, "Powder" is also the title of the play that will be shown by the Argos Group Theatre throughout the month of November.

The piece, by playwright Abel González Melo, shows a hidden, squalid Havana, inhabited by many demoralized human beings who are fighting within and as part of a parallel reality, which for some may seem unusual.

The story starkly exposes the wishes of the characters and their attemtps to try to realize their foolish desires, even if it means having, in the words of one critic "to descend into a bottomless moral abyss." This decline defines them and exposes them as they are, which is chained to the needs and aspirations that may be trivial to some, but not all.

The staging, set by director Carlos Celdran, makes us confront a ruined creation, negligible and erratic in nature, and discover the characters´ motivations, their tensions, their insensitive decline, their disturbances and their inevitable shipwreck.

I think the main point of the staging is exposing the veil that obscures the darker side of Havana and Havanians, by showing the collective and personal losses with which we live.
