There is joy and expectation among those in Havana, lovers of theater, after the news that a new play by the emblematic, successful author Nicolás Door is coming to our stage: La profana familia, The Profane Family. The playwright wisely mixes in all parts, drama with humor, in a kind of fusion that always impacts and positively engages the spectator, as he did in Cuban theater´s classic play, Una casa colonial, A Colonial House.

However, Door doesn´t always use the same method, such as in his previous play, El hombre más codiciado del mundo, The most coveted man in the world, a frank comedy that enjoyed remarkable success among the public and critical acclaim in 2005.

In the case of The Profane Family, just as other times, the author also directs the play, so the spectators lose neither the artistic process nor the message, which is linked to the most genuine national affairs. Meticulously appearing within the heart of a family nucleus, revealing individual and group attitudes, this play portrays a particular family that could possibly ring a bell with us, maybe it could be our neighbor.

Because, there are certainly human beings and families that live such as they do in this play, without much internal respect, without the necessary filial cohesion, without help or mutual support and with twisted, two-faced morals. Life for them is a perennial fair, an endless celebration. These humans are consciously unaware of social criteria, which has no value among them.

The approach Nicolás Door uses, invites us to ponder upon the dysfunctional individual or group, which in this case is a family. For this, the author uses melodramatic situations, via a translucent yet cutting humor, even with ridicule in order to expose us to a subject that is neither distant nor unusual for both Cubans or the rest of the world.

The show will start this Thursday 9 June until 12 July.
