Theater groupe "El Público"

Some theater troupes are marked by the tenure of a strong leader, and with the troupe “El Público”; this is the case with their director Carlos Diaz. From its founding in1992, Carlos Díaz has assumed some artistic risks that have helped make this troupe a good representative of the contemporary Cuban theater scene.

Some of the topics that “El Público” takes on are intolerance, conventional belief, double morality, lack of spirituality, authoritarianism, and the defense of an unabashed sexuality, to just mention a few.

The actors always choose excellent works and perform them amazingly, ably communicating with the viewer.

Classic plays like “A Streetcar Named Desire”, “The Crucible”, “La Celestina”, “The Glass Menagerie”, “King Lear”, and “Tea and Sympathy”, along with some lesser known contemporary plays.

Some critics think that the plays are excessive, some think they are too ironic, but almost all agree that they are post-modern. I personally think that they come from a rich Cuban cultural tradition that draws from different influences. Diaz manages to make it all work wonderfully.
