Cuban theater is celebrated on January 22nd, in remembrance of events that took place on that date in 1869, when the Corps of Volunteers in Havana stormed the Teatro Villanueva, which was performing a play that favored Independence from Spain, and whose pro-Independence message was greeted with wild applause from the audience.

Theater is commemorated with a variety of theatrical performances, such as the Villanueva Awards to the best new plays of the last year, as well as foreign productions that came in the same period.

The exhibit "From spoken to performed: theater" will be held (in Spanish), and a round table will be held on the subject of Cuban dramaturgy.

A web forum will also be held, called "Cuban theater: navigating memory and forgetting, through this site: www.cubaescena.cult.cu

Other activities include the workshop “Dance and body in question”, organized by the Havana Dance Center, choir concerts in the Palacio de la Opera, and musical events throughout the city performed by Gigantería d’ambular in the Plaza de Armas.

The National Theater Award will be handed out on the 22nd, which will conclude a day of homage, commemorations, and celebrations of the world of theater.
