Alexis Bosch at one of his brilliant performances
In Cuba, we say "Se da como la verdolaga" (Growing like a weed) when something pops up or easily manifests, plentifully and wherever it is, even without the ideal conditions, to astonishment and collective joy.
Cultivators of good Jazz on the island are exactly like the weed, germinating with vitality and vigor wherever they are, representing a genre characterized by total freedom, improvisation. A good example is Alexis Bosch and his Cuban Jazz Project.
When one listens to this quintet´s songs, and also Bosch´s solos, they discover Jazz-like influences from other groups, such as the fabulous pianist (now unfortunately deceased) Emiliano Salvador, in addition to Peruchín, the great Chucho Valdés, Frank Emilio, and of course the always huge Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum, Chick Corea and Thelonious Monk. But, even with those influences, these young musicians have a style and sound that is truly original, with current orchestrations that take on a repertoire of Cuban music, classic Jazz and Latin Jazz Standars, creating a fusion.
Bosch artistically unfolds in multiple facets, as a music producer, drummer, composer and arranger, but above all, is one of Cuba´s finest pianists. Bosch´s project is not rigid, but to the contrary, is currently as most Cuban musicians, where there are various job options, integrating Cuban Jazz while working simultaneously with various groups, which permits them to expand their creative universe, coexisting with different musical styles and generations. Here they embrace a line of work that constantly changes, renews and restructures, and which as Bosch says, allows them to navigate "like a sailboat in the ocean, always destined for good music, especially Cuban Jazz."
Alexis Bosch and his Cuban Jazz Project have played in famous international Jazz events such as Oslo Jazz Festival, Sildajazz and Varanger Jazzfestivalen, receiving satisfactory opinions from the critics and an excellent public reception. They´ve had memorable concerts at the Teatro Auditórium Amadeo Roldán and at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana. Their next show, to which you are cordially invited, will be at the Agencia Cubana de Derecho de Autor Musical (ACDAM)(Cuban Musical Rights Agency), tomorrow, 21 July, at 6 p.m.
