William Vivanco
Among the many good recitals held in Havana during April, there are two in particular that I´d like to suggest. An excellent fusion music cultivator and recent revolutionary creator and performer, William Vivanco is energetic and original.
With always disturbing compositions and brave lyrics, true Cuban chronicles of these times, Vivanco combines bossa nova, rap, reggae, blues with a troubadour son and melodically captivating fusions that surprise and inspire.
William Vivanco will be preforming the next Sunday, 24 april, at 11:00 p.m. at the Bertolt Brecht Theater Café, an ideal site to enjoy his music; it will surely be crowded as he is very popular among young people.
Not very far from there, at the recently renovated nightclub La Gruta, 20 and 27 April, José Luis Cortés (El Tosco) and NG La Banda with guests will preform at 10:00 p.m., playing dance music which continues to keep the island healthy. José Luis, who developed his artistic talent within the two Cuban musical cathedrals, Irakere y Los Van Van, makes his mark on this group, which has been indispensable in the island´s music scene since 1988. Many consider them an inspirational source of Timba (Cuban salsa), which has generated many rebuttals amidst scholars and critics; but, they unquestionably maintain their deserved role within Cuban dance music.
