Pancho Amat the biggest
This Thursday, 21 July, at 5 p.m., Pancho Amat will be showcasing all of his talent on the "el tres" (a Cuban instrument) together with Cabildo del Son, at the Museo de la Música (Museum of Music).
"El tres" is something inherent to Son; one couldn´t exist without the other, and because of that, it has been considered by some as a lesser instrument, only valid in popular music. But Pancho Amat —the most legitimate heir to Arsenio Rodríguez and Niño Rivera, fabulous and very famous "treseros," (someone using el tres)— throughout all of his career, in his excellent and rigorous interpretive work, has continued to elevate its status as a concert instrument, in the same way he has showcased genres as diverse as classical music, traditional ballads and jazz.
This musician has developed a truly enriching career, dabbling in different forms of Cuban music, such as trios or quartets, typical ensembles and "charangas," (using a small five-stringed guitar) among others. He´s been a "tresero" for groups such as Manguaré, Adalberto Álvarez and his Son, Cubanismo, Noche Tropical, Barbarito Torres and even Buena Vista: The Next Generation. He´s been awarded various times with Cubadisco awards in Popular Traditional Music and Specialized Critique categories.
There´s a lot of talk about his work and virtuosity, his recordings and musical collaborations with artists such as Oscar D'León, Ry Cooder, Joaquín Sabina, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Rosana, Víctor Víctor, Yomo Toro, and Víctor Jara among others. He´s always preformed with success and recognition in the US, Japan, France and other Old Continent nations. With his rapid finger picking and his marvelous ability to improvise with "el tres," he´s known as "El Rápido de Güira de Melena" (The Quick One from Melena´s Fruits) (Melana is the city where he´s from). More so every day, he is known as the best "el tres" player, so he´s constantly in demand within the best Cuban traditional music projects, which he does without abandoning his group that´s been with him for more than a decade, Cabildo de Son. With them, he has a rich repertoire ranging from Bolero and Son Montuno to Afrocuban music, all of which you can enjoy by attending this special presentation.
