Sala Atril, a small perfomance space at Karl Marx theater, Havana, Cuba.
The biggest theater in Havana, previously known as the Blanquita, now the Karl Marx, has a small performance space called Sala Atril.
But it is not a space used for theater performances, but rather for the most talented up and coming Cuban musicians, soloists and groups alike.
It is a welcoming and elegant place, already well-known among foreign visitors, for the excellent food service, and the extensive cocktail menu.
I think another one of its attributes is the excellent audio-visual system, with light and video projectors that allow the audience-more of a live music audience than a nightclub crowd- to truly enjoy the show. During the month of May, for example, pop singers like Anabel Lopez and Dayanis Lozano, as well as the rock group Gens, take to the stage. You can also see the reggaeton singer Baby Lores, and past performers include Robertico Carcases and his group, Acento Latino.
One downside to the Sala Atril? It is a very small space, so you should get there early, since the bouncers have been known to limit the crowd size when the hall gets overcrowded.
It can be reserved for private events as well, like business dinners and corporate events.
Sala Atril is on 1010 Avenida 1, between 8th and 10th streets, in Miramar, Playa, and its numbers are (537) 2067596 and (537) 2063816.
When you visit you’ll learn why Sala Atril’s motto is “A place for sharing”.
