César López

César López

Many classify him as a true master of the saxophone, and unlike Charlie Parker, this guy is 100 percent Cuban and Havanian. Considered among the best in the world, the virtuous César Alejandro López Martínez, better known as César López, in addition to being an instrumentalist, arranges and composes music. So it makes sense that he is the leader and singer of the Habana Ensemble, which is already, for their own merits, in the elite world of jazz and popular music.

There´s a saying that goes, "The closer you get to a good tree, the shadow will be better," (basically meaning, if you surround yourself with good people, good things will happen) and César, who first connected with ardent promoter of Latin jazz Bobby Carcassés, and later, with the award-winning Chucho Valdés, as a part of the exceptional macro-band Irakere, did just that.

Drinking from their fountains, sharing rigor, complexities, discipline and a professionalism that radiated with these big names, along with his talent and authenticity, made this young man a grand figure: César López. Habana Ensemble´s repertoire includes Latin jazz, popular concert and dance music from all parts of the world, giving all pieces a distinct, contemporary sound.

For their exceptional quality, the group has played on and shared many stages with prominent figures such as Tito Puente, Marcus Muller, Compay Segundo, Saúo Gíra, John Pizzarelli , Danny Rivera and Richard Egües, among others. On my part, I confess to be a vehement fan of César López and Habana Ensemble, as perhaps there is evidence in previous articles. I also try to attend all performances, and this Sunday, 29 May at 8:00 p.m., I will undoubtedly be at the Florida Hotel´s exquisite Piano Bar Maragato.
