In the Cuban capital, we are accustomed to a certain type of popular festivities during the hottest months (July and August), which are traditionally in the Malecón area.
Ignoring a 116-year tradition, many —some consciously, others unconsciously— consider these festivities as Carnavales, something never done in the summer in San Cristóbal. But, something changed in this area, as this time, sanity and the customs prevailed, thus the celebrations begin today, 8 August, 2011, until this Sunday, 14. They have been dubbed as "Fiestas Mi Habana," and not as Carnavales Habana 2011, as they had inconsiderately done a few years ago.
The "Fiestas Mi Habana" will have a stage and limited schedule. From the intersection of 19th Street and Malecón (the area that Havanians know as Piragua) until Marina Street (one of the streets that frames the Maceo Park) festivities will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Organizers assured that five floats representing the distinct ministries or economic sectors and social institutions will participate, as well as the always attractive traditional troupes, which involves a great number of dancers, musicians, and theater troupes, among which are the successful El Alacrán, Los Marqueses de Atarés, Los Guaracheros de Regla, La Jardinera and university students (FEU).
In areas adjacent to 19 and Malecón, there will be pre-shows from dancers, top musical groups, and shops and kiosks along the Malecón will be in charge of food. During the day, as a complement to the celebrations, various cultural institutions and recreational groups will have a varied program, which according to their promoters, is meant for all ages and tastes.
I'm sure that thousands of city dwellers will attend the "Fiestas Mi Habana" during one of these seven days, to dance with their favorite band or enjoy the parade's always marvelous choreography. There will also be some who come for the beautiful models usually adorning the floats, or to eat delicious traditional dishes and sweets; and many will simply go to drink beer, because we strongly believe that it helps with the heat and euphoria.
If you are in Havana and want to see a truly massive celebration, this year's "Fiestas Mi Habana 2011" is the perfect opportunity.
