Dancers enjoying danzón.
Dancing for many is a beautiful act, revealing, a link between beings and feelings and as the experts say, "the body´s innocent conversation with itself or with another or with many." And for the majority of Cubans, regardless of age, it´s something intrinsic, essential.
Due to that, I´d like to discuss a genre that despite its 132 years of existence, still has many followers, not only on this island, but in other latitudes as well, whom still practice it to this day. I´m talking about "Danzón," (Cuba´s national dance) a danceable rhythm extremely attractive for those—myself included—who prefer close physical contact, no major movements nor changes, good for warm climates such as ours and which has many musical influences on later genres, such as "son" or "mambo."
Its folk relevancy is undeniable, explaining why for the past 14 years, Havana has celebrated with the Danzón International Festival. National and foreign dancers, musicologists, bands and of course, lovers of the style, all come to make this biennial festival a true party. It´s a party to which all are invited, hosted by important Havana theaters, during 24-27 March.
For such an occasion, the event is dedicated to the genre´s leading figures, to Mexican states Oaxaca and Tamaulipas and also, Toluca city.
