Miriela Moreno, Pitted Olive´s Leader

The fusion group Aceituna sin Hueso (Pitted Olives) has been well received by Havana´s music lovers.

Several years ago, the group set foot in the Cuban capital for good and to delight us all with their music, influenced by flamenco, country, Andean, Hindi, Celtic, Arabic and many other diverse sources; because of this, they often played the song "Marginales.com´s" video clip on Cuban television, a track after which their first album is named and that boosted the career of their leader and singer Miriela Moreno along with the band´s fame.

Emerging from the city of Santa Clara, they began in 2002. From that time on, they have done experimental-type work. With a rather unusual format—from the instruments point of view—they merge, with great originality, Cuban rhythms and worldly folk music.

Aceituna has their usual spots in Havana nightclubs; the most important and where they have maintained a presence for years is Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberries and Chocolate), a bar located in the center of 23rd Street, between 10th and 12th, in the Vedado area, where the band plays every Sunday from 9:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. The group also plays every Saturday from 8 - 12 p.m at the Patio Amarillo (Yellow Patio), a restaurant located in the Cathedral Plaza vicinity in Old Havana. They have also started offering shows every Friday from 9:00 p.m. - 6.00 a.m at Bar Esperanza, 17th between M and N in the Vedado area. Occasionally, the group performs at Bertolt Brecht Theater Cafe, in the Vedado area on 13th Street between J and K. In many of their performances, the band is accompanied by prominent Cuban and foreign musicians, including Francis del Río, Isis Flores and Telmary.

Aceituna sin Hueso has developed an intense music career. In addition to their clubs and fixed locations, they play on various venues in the country, as well as for television and radio programs. Recognized for their work, the Cuban Institute of Music awarded them the Popular Music in Concert and the Grand Prize awards. Currently they have a brief, but great discography: Marignales.com and Consumir preferiblemente antes de…" (Best by…). And, a third album is due out early this year.
