Luis Cortés and NG La Banda at El Delirio Habanero
Cuba´s National Theater´s magnificent space, Delirio Habanero, has a diverse offer this Sunday, 10 July, for dancers and people of all ages.
From 4 to 8 p.m., the stage will host The Kents, a rock band that was popular in the 60´s and 70´s with an infinite amount of supporters to this day. They play classic rock, generally in English.
Then, starting at 10 p.m. until 3 a.m., José Luis Cortés and NG La Banda (The band that rules) will move dancers with their popular Cuban dance music. This group broke out two decades ago and are here to stay, representing the Cuban popular dance music elite with their rich, tasteful, distinctive rhythms. NG makes music of the times, constantly updating salsa variations that experts have dubbed as "timba," a genre that demands to be pulsated by the truly virtuous in each of the instruments. Many dancers feel that the José Luis Cortés and NG La Banda´s permanent success is because of their style and intermediate sounds they´ve adapted, transforming them into a fresh mix between Irakere and Los Van Van, two distinguished Cuban bands. Personally, I´m one who thinks that the band´s deserved notoriety is also because of their lyrics´ themes, which synthesize popular vocabulary with neighborhood vocabulary, as the great soneros of the past did, although some cultural authorities have labeled them as "tacky and vulgar."
What´s certain, is that nearly all their music, throughout the years, has had success and been well-known in the general public, with dancers in particular, always grateful for their performances, such as this one on Sunday, 10 July at Delirio Habanero.
