Sexto Sentido
If I had to define them in a few words, I'd say that they're four young women, mulattas, all representative of the Cuban woman. They are all four original voices, impressively talented, who are doing quite well in the contemporary Cuban music scene.
Sexto Sentido specializes in the vocal quartet style, so popular in Cuba in the 40's, 50's and 60's, which fell from favor somewhere along the line. The group's music touches on different genres, like R&B, jazz and Cuban music, all selected with the finest taste that allow the girls to offer music that resonates with everyone.
I think that part of their success comes from their use of the "feeling" musical genre, which reached its peak in the 40's. Sexto Sentido has also taken from jazz sounds, especially Latin and Cuban jazz, and boss nova. Add in a little gospel and blues for good measure.
They've shared the stage with Chucho Valdés, Michel Legrand, as well as Steve Coleman and the Five Elements, and have been praised by Cesar Portillo de la Luz , Marta Valdés, Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes. Their album, "Mi Feeling", is considered by critics to be a jewel of Cuban music. In their concert tours in places like Mexico, Monaco, and Russia, they've been embraced by audiences.
Lastly, they also work to create awareness around the HIV prevention, and have worked tirelessly to promote women's rights. Attending one of their concerts, one can see how elegant, distinguished, and accomplished these young women are.
