The young Farah María with Los Meme
There are people who implement trends and leave traces in the arts or life. Farah María has done so.
Born in Havana on December 7, 1944, this singer has started out as part of the most famous female quartet of the 60s in Cuba: Los Meme. That’s where she learnt the basics of singing and performing from her master Meme Solís.
In 1969 she started her solo career during which she has been awarded prizes from the festivals in Dresden (Germany) and Tokio (Japan) in 1974. She also received an award of the Golden Orpheus Festival in Bulgaria two years later. Plus she has received other important recognition, awards and has achieved endless popularity.
This woman sang for the first time the songs "Canción del elegido" and "El día feliz que está llegando" composed by the singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. Other songs like "Un cuento", "El tiburón", "Ámame y no pienses más" and "El recuerdo de aquel largo viaje" were added to the list of successful songs of this Cuban artist.
Blessed with a natural charm of an “earthly Venus”, Farah María pleases with her grace, talent and way of dressing always according to the latest fashion. She has performed with her sweet and soft voice of a small timbre and virtuosity on stages in Mexico, Norway, Greece, and Italy where she has even participated in a show of Tropicana presented by the Italian star Rafaela Carrá.
This queen of all stages, copied by many, keeps her beauty alive, refusing herself to the time passing by. I remember one afternoon where I, still being a child, was walking with my parents when I saw the traffic all standing still in a corner between the streets 23 and L, when Farah María crossed, delighting everybody with her “diva style” of walking, which gave her the nickname of Gazelle of Cuba.
