John Lennon is alive and in Havana
One of the few cities (and countries around the world) where for many years it was an official and state sin to listen to the legendary quartet, The Beatles, Cuba is now paying tribute to one of their more brilliant members, John Lennon.
Since December 2000, a beautiful park in the capital´s El Vedado district, which occupies the block bordered by 17th an 15th Street between 6th and 8th, instead of an area with age-old, non-conformist ideas, has become an area focused on human chimeras.
Our Havanian John Lennon, now relaxed and calm, seated on an iron bench, watches the passers-by and is visited by hundreds of fans every day, national and foreign; his admirers come to either to be photographed next to Liverpool´s cursed man or to talk to him and sing his songs or to pay him the tribute he deserves. The amount of love for this noble statue can be seen.
Lennon´s magic radiates throughout the park, where the spirit of his music is present, as well as his pacifist and transforming ideas. The park also hosts a consistent set of concerts and performances. I think both locals and visitors need to thank Cuban sculptor José Villa for this naturalistic art, which seems to say, "Nothing can be banned forever…"
Address: 17th Street between 6 and 8, El Vedado.
