La Quinta de los Molinos is a green oasis in the city

In the center of Havana´s urban zone one can find La Quinta de los Molinos, a natural haven, the oxygenating lungs of the city.

During the late eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century, two water-powered mills were located on the grounds, which crushed tobacco leaves for snuff and chewing tobacco, prized products in high demand by Europeans in the most exclusive lounges, for which the area is named.

However, initially, it was known as "Jardín de Tacón" after the island "General Captain" last name; and who in 1836 built a vacation home in this area for its beautiful flowers and fauna and its fresh climate.

The land was later expanded by Governor Don Leopoldo O'Donnell. In June 1989, the Liberation Army´s Licensing Office was established there, and also, it is known as the last residence of General Maximo Gomez.

The first botanical garden of the city was also situated in this area, and subsequently the University of Havana´s School of Agronomy, where they also hosted many major dog and livestock exhibitions. Many of the leafy-plant species associated with these institutions are still preserved there today.

Some areas of La Quinta de los Molinos are specially equipped with the ability to breed birds, many roosters like the Creole birds, many of which you can appreciate while touring the different areas of Old Havana.

Since 1986, La Quinta de los Molinos has been declared a National Monument, and is currently under a restoration process; however, it´s failing to carry out the necessary measures needed to preserve the natural heritage and environment.
