The last municipal of the old provence of Havana was founded in the year 1803. A historic place where, because of the sowing of cane, it was conducive to import slaves. This unleashed a fierce front with the so called ranchers. This land harbored our valiant revolutionaries led by Eliseo Figueroa, who confronted the Spanish Army.
Madruga is recognized world-wide for its minero-medicinal waters which attracted national and international tourism in the 19th century. Today the mineral water "El Copey" is bottled there along with its commercialization with a central sugar plant, which is still active.
The history of Madruga cannot be continued without mentioning the different personalities like Dr. José María Pardiñas, who was the town mayor and contributed to the political and cultural development; Dr. José Julio Leyva, a merited professor; The teachers José and Odilio Urfé, for their great support of world music; the poet Catalina Rodríguez de Morales; the martyr Boris Luis Santa Coloma; the assailant to the Moncada Barracks, the representative of Cuba in La ONU in 1960, Manuel González; the distinguished Sergio (Pipián) Martínez, whi was the first cuban cyclist that obtained gold measles in international events (that's where he got his nickname 'king of the race'); Dr. Serio Soto, who played a crucial role in the identification of the rest of the "Che" Guevara and his companions in Bolivia; the laureled Doctor of medical science and merited professor of the university of Havana, Silvia Martínez; and last but not least, the loved professor and historian Josefa Martínez Calvo; and popular sport commentator, Rene Navarro.
All of them, without fear of exaggeration, have written in the history books of this town through their lives. Where most indigenous and authentic roots come together, which identify us and make to grow; where there are examples of our idiosyncrasy everywhere, joined to the beauty of its natural resources and its resplendent springs, which make us love Cubanism even more.
