A reader suggested to me in an email that I should address the topic of the Cuban capital's major commercial centers, where she and other interested tourists could get food and toiletries needed during their stay.

So considering the large number of visitors who prefer not to stay in hotels or state hostels, rather comfortable and always more economical private houses —which are licensed for this— I decided to write on this subject.

If you are staying in the Central Havana area, I recommend you shop at the popular "Carlos III" Shopping Center Plaza, which has four levels (with all types of stores): a food market, various cafés and restaurants, a currency exchange office and parking, among other facilities. Now, if you chose a house in the older part of the city, I recommend the Harris Brothers Commercial Center, which structurally and commercial wise, is similar to the former.

For those who choose the cozy Vedado area, I invite you to try out the modern "Galerías Paseo" Shopping Center, which has everything you could need.

The following list gives you the addresses of these and other shopping centers located in the Playa area, where perhaps the most well-known places are; however, in all honesty, the entire city has small markets, stores or kiosks where one can acquire the essentials, if you prefer to be in contact with friendly renters and not just another hotel vacation.
