Manana Club
Manana Club is a young musical group, forming hardly three years ago, and who have created their own place in a highly competitive national scene.
The group´s repertoire goes from dance music (their own compositions) to so-called traditional music, with songs ranging from ballads to cumbia mixed with salsa (timba); although, they also attack Latin jazz and fusion.
Their director and bassist, Pedro Lázaro Ordóñez Padrón—Papucho—recognizes that "raising a new, unknown group is very difficult, especially when there are so many good musicians in Cuba and so many stars." But, with tenacity, rigor and a lot of trial, they have already structured a project that has shared in the dance scene and with first-class groups, such as NG La Banda, Bamboleo and Havana D´Primera.
Having recently seen a Manana Club show, I can tell you that I liked their music as such, and especially the musicians´ projections on stage: changing instruments, great choreography, extraordinary percussion and violin solos. In a few words, they hit me with a different type of demonstration.
In Yoruba language, "manana" is a term meaning "pump," which for Cubans is synonymous with heart—and feeling, widely used in music jargon.
Manana Club will play at the Café Cantante Mi Habana on 26 May, starting at 5 p.m.
