It´s a fact that Cubans like to dance, and generally we do it well. In a previous article, I referred to this passion, to which we have historically given free rein, either in private parties, nightclubs or dance areas.

In the 90´s, the first discotheque, The Hotel Comodoro (The Commodore Hotel), came on the scene in Havana due to the state´s international tourism undertaking.

Later on, others opened their doors, also well-equipped, such as the Melía Cohiba Hotel´s Aché; and then, some not-so-technologically equipped, which also adopted the profile. It was truly a fever that swept the country, perhaps for the novelty and also, because nationals were given the opportunity to positively and intensely interact with foreign tourists.

Almost immediately in parallel, other social phenomena began to manifest, such as drug use and prostitution, ruining the clubs. For example, the local Comodoro transformed into an organic vegetarian restaurant. Others became ballrooms, cafes, etc. In turn, the Havana nightlife disappeared, the so demonized discotheques closed. DJ animation shows came to fill these fun, dance spaces, but I don´t think it was the same.

However, times change, as do mentalities and circumstances. Hence now we´re sharing the scoop, that the La Puntilla commercial center´s discotheque will open their doors every Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m. until 12 a.m. Ladies get in free, while men have to pay a $2.00 CUC cover. The local´s managers guarantee air conditioning and music hits and videos clips for enjoyment, which will cover the prodigious past hits to today. They will also have animators, karaoke and a tempting range of cocktails, sodas and other alcoholic beverages. I feel that anything is something, the first step toward rebuilding places where we can unleash our dance fever.
