Mid-day Sunday, during low-tourism season, and Lluvia de Oro is almost full. Photo by L. Calvo.
It doesn´t show up on any list of grand or most renowned Havana restaurants, but it should.
Firstly for its location, which is strategic: right on the ever-so-busy Obispo Street, neither too far up, nor too far down, simply perfect.
The quality and mastery in their cooking, along with the love put into preparing their various dishes, is the second condition worthy of noting.
The third element I should mention are their prices, starting with their appetizers: hors d´oeuvre or a tuna salad with vegetables costs $4 CUC, while the shrimp cocktail is only $4.40 CUC. Also, their main dishes have acceptable prices, where they have an elaborate chicken between $3.50 and $4.50 CUC. They also have a "bistec de palomilla" (a marinated steak) for $4 CUC, an exquisite "ropa vieja" (a beef stew dish with black beans and rice) for $4.50 CUC and so on. The place also offers lighter options, such as tuna sandwiches and pizzas — their special one called "Lluvia de Oro" (ham, chorizo and onion) is $5.50; and there´s one with shrimp and tuna for $6 CUC. Currently, the house dish, recommended by their chef —and also me— is the simply fabulous and aromatic chicken "a la chorrea" (something like stir-fried vegetables) with rice, at $3.50 CUC.
Lluvia de Oro (Golden Rain) has a solid bar, made with precious, shiny woods, well stocked and in addition to cocktails, they have beer as well.
Finally, the last element that makes this place, for me, deserving to be most prominent, is their food service, efficient, quiet, simple and open 24 hours a day, every day.
